Irving, Texas

Though it is not known for certain whether Irving, Texas was actually named for the famous author Washington Irving, the city officially adopted him as its namesake in 1998. Irving benefits from its close proximity to the Dallas and Fort Worth areas. Those moving to Irving will enjoy great shopping and dining, as well as local museums.

Some of the top employers in Irving are Verizon, Citigroup, Nokia and Abbott Laboratories. There are many other prominent companies with headquarters in Irving like ExxonMobil, Kimberly-Clark, La Quinta Inns and Suites, Omni Hotels, Chuck E. Cheese and Michaels Stores. Several airlines also have corporate locations in Irving too – Freedom Airlines, Mesa Air Group, Mexicana de Aviacion and China Airlines. The city government is attempting to get investors as well as other companies into Irving. With all of these new commerical properties in the workds, Irving moving companies are sure to be very busy.

Las Colinas is a master-planned community located in Irving -- filled with shops, restaurants and country clubs and upscale hotels, lofts and gated neighborhoods. Those moving to the area will also find the glorious Mustangs of Las Colinas there. These bronze beauties make up the “largest equestrian structure in the world.” They are the creation of a very famous sculptor named Robert Glen who worked on this project for seven years prior to its completion in 1984. More tourists visit this exhibit in Las Colinas than any other site in North Texas. It is truly a sight to be seen, and the sculpted group of bronze horses are surprisingly life-like.

The future city of Irving was first settled in the 1850s. The area was discovered by J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown in 1903. As the town began to grow, residents of Irving decided to vote whether or not Irving should be incorporated to officially become a city. The majority of the townspeople were for the incorporation and on April 14, 1914, Irving became a city. The first industries to thrive in Irving were cotton, dairy farming and poultry. During the 1920s the city got electricity, a water system and a volunteer fire department. By the 1930s Irving had mass transit bus service and in 1941 its first public library’s doors were opened. In the 1950s University of Dallas began matriculating students. In 1955, a very large shopping center opened and in 1964 Irving Community Hospital opened too. In 1971, the Dallas Cowboys moved their home to Irving.

Interesting Facts:

  • In the 1920s, if there was a fire in Irving, the City Commissioner would fire his gun six times to signal the firemen.
  • In 1970, Irving’s population hit the 100,000 mark.
  • The Heritage district was designed by the city’s founder in 1903, and today visitors to the area can still visit antique shops, old fashioned soda shops and an original pharmacy.
