Torrance, California

Torrance, California is home to 1.5 miles of sandy beaches that 149,111 residents call home. As the sixth largest city in Los Angeles County, Torrance is an ideal destination for those who love warm weather, beautiful parks with over 90,000 trees and natural wetlands. It is also the home of oil refineries, where many of its residents work, as well as the home of car manufacturers – Toyota and Hondo. All of these exciting amenities and more will be at your disposal when moving to Torrance.

Economy:
Torrance is a popular manufacturing city – home of Honeywell Aerospace, Pelican Products and Robinson helicopters, Toyota and Honda, as well as the location of Exxcon. Ohzora Publishing, a Japanese company is also located in Torrance, along with the footwear companies Globe and Lakai. As a major producer of California’s oil, Torrance was not as popular as it once was; Torrance still produces oil in Carson, Texas and in Wilmington. Torrance also has a busy aviation port called “Zamperini Field” where 175,000 planes take off every year – which is rather different from the 428,000 flights that once left the airport (formerly called “Torrance Airport) in 1974. With all of these interesting employment opportunities, it’s easy to see why Torrance moving companies are so busy.

Tourism:
Torrance beaches such as Redondo Beach “Rat Beach” or the Palos Verdes Estates is a popular way to spend the day –enjoying the surf, partaking in volleyball or simply enjoying the surf. For those who love shopping, they will surely enjoy the 2.5 million-square-foot Del Amo Fashion Center – currently the fourth largest mall in the U.S. There is also Alpine Village –located right outside of Torrance – that features quaint European-themed eateries, small shops and galleries, as well as the location of the annual Oktoberfest celebrations (held in during the weekends in September and October). For a cultural attraction, there is the Armstrong theatre, local parks such as the Madrona Marsh Nature Center and Preserve and Greenwood Park and the Torrance Famers Market for some fresh and local fruits and vegetables.

History:
Torrance was instituted as part of Spanish Empire as a result of the Ranchos San Pedro land grant of 1784. It wasn’t until the early-1900s that Jared Sidney Torrance (whom Torrance is named after), along with other investors saw a huge value in this industrial community for residential housing. They purchased some of the land grant and hired renowned architect, Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr. to design Torrance. The project was completed in 1912 and officially incorporated in May 1921.

Colleges/Universities:
