Okay, everyone is trying to save a buck in this economy, and with so many people relocating for employment opportunities, a lot of newbies are faced with the prospect of a really big move. So the question becomes, “Can I forgo the long distance moving company, find a one-way truck rental and do it myself?”

Well, can you? Most of us have moved at least once in our lives, so try to remember just how big that job of packing was. It’s strange how the volume of a person’s stuff seems to triple once packing starts. The key here is to start early, buy lots of boxes and stay organized.

As you pack up your belongings, keep count of how many moving boxes you have and ask yourself what kind of moving truck you’ll need. Do you have need for special storage? Vintage wine, furs, cigars all need special storage and handling. The smaller the moving van, the easier it will be for you to move your belongings without the help of professionals.

Once the packing is complete…the work is just beginning. First, you need to find some friends that are willing to help out with the move. Remember the “Seinfeld” episode when baseball star Keith Hernandez asks Jerry to help him move? Expect it to go down like that. You may have friends that love you, but trust me; none of them want to help you haul moving boxes. And even if they do agree to help out, they’re sure to be so mad at you midway though moving day that they will bash the bejeezus out of every piece of furniture you own.

Also, it is important to keep in mind that if you have a lot of boxes and heavy furniture, you will most likely need to rent an extremely large van or truck. If that is the case, be sure to find out the details of your state and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) laws as you might need a special driver’s license.

Okay, you’re all loaded up. Uch, now you need to DRIVE. If you’re going long distance, it may not be that cheap to drive the truck yourself. You’ll have to spend a lot of money on fuel, tolls, food and motels.

A Little Help
If cash is really an issue, and you have a large, long-distance relocation, the best bet might be self service moving, which is a popular option that is cheaper than using a full-service moving company, though it is more expensive than driving a rented truck to the destination. While you will still need to bribe some pals to help you stock the truck, you can stick around and buy them beers while professional interstate movers care of the driving.

Depending on your requirements, a self service moving company will drop off a crate or a trailer at your home. You can pack your possessions, then the company will collect it and drive it to the destination, where you can unpack.

Obtain quotes from at least three self service moving companies, and verify their credentials before choosing one of them. Make your selection on the basis of good reputation and track record, rather than lowest quote.

Or, if there is a lot of stuff and the relocation is long distance, you might want to invest in having a reputable and established company do it for you. It might just be worth the money to save time, friendships and peace of mind.
