Four to Five Weeks Prior to Move

It may seem like with four to five weeks before you move, you have plenty of time before you need to start worrying about the details, but a successful move is the result of thoughtful preparation and careful planning. It is still might be too early to pack and clean the house but here are some things you can be doing to get ready for the move.
  • Change of address: Go online and visit https://www.usps.com/ to obtain a change of address form. You can also obtain the form at your local post office. You should notify appropriate people and businesses of your planned move. You can often do this online, over the phone or by mailing a copy of your change of address form. Make sure to notify banks, insurance companies, credit card companies, doctors, dentists, clubs or associations, magazine and newspaper subscriptions as well as your friends and family.

  • Consolidate: Decide what must come with you and what can be left behind. This may be the time to get rid of broken toys and old newspapers and magazines. Make your decisions now because adding more weight to your shipment means adding more cost to how much you will pay your moving company.

  • Lists and packing: At this time it would beneficial to make a list of what your mover will be transporting, what you will be moving yourself, and what you will leave behind. When packing, it is best to let the professionals handle the bulk of it. Professional moving companies know the best methods for keeping items safe and secure and can pack your items in a way that will be most efficient for transportation of your items. If you decide to do some or most of the packing then please refer to our packing guide for helpful tips and information.

  • Kids: Get your kids involved in the moving process by allowing them to do some supervised packing. Stuffed animals are always a good item to have your young children pack. Start talking with your child about a layout for their new room. Let them make the suggestions. This is a good way to make it fun and exciting to move.
