Cleaning Tips for When You Move

If you’re about to move into a new home, you need to make sure it’s ready for you and all of your belongings first. Who knows what the previous occupants got up to in their spare time? Whether you’re moving across the street or across the country, it’s always a good idea to give your new home a good cleaning before you set up your items.

Here are some tips on cleaning your new home before you move in to guarantee everything is as spotless and shiny as you deserve.

Start with the Kitchen

If there are any weird smells in your new home, they’re probably coming from the kitchen. With a variety of cooking smells accumulating over the years from previous tenants, you need to give it a thorough cleaning to make it yours. Be prepared, however, because cleaning the kitchen will be a whole ordeal no matter where you’re moving to. The work is worth it, though. Think of how many memories you and your family will make in your new beautiful kitchen.

The fridge can be a difficult beast to conquer. It’s the place where forgotten leftovers get spoiled and strange cooking experiments are left untouched. Because of this, you might need some heavy duty cleaner if it’s really bad. Most of the time, some baking soda and water will do the trick. Be careful if you use a brush, however, as you don’t want to scratch the surface.

Get Behind the Stove

Cleaning the top of the stove and inside the oven may seem like common sense. Remember that most oven cleaners take about 20 minutes to work, so it’s a good idea to start with that. As the oven cleaner works, you can hit the top of the stove. Don’t shy away from grease remover if it comes down to it.

Once that’s completed, you need to get behind the stove. Remember all the times you dropped something under the stove as a child and never said anything? You’re not the only one. Make sure you’re thoroughly cleaning underneath and behind where the stove sits. While it’s out, give the sides of the stove a good scrub too. Clean the dials and gauges, and you’ll soon have your stove looking brand new.

Use the Right Product for the Right Surface

The walls and floors of your new place can be filthy, but cleaning them with the wrong product can make things even worse. If you have some particularly stubborn stains on the wall, liquid stick cleaners will do the trick most of the time. There’s another solution, however, that may be a bit cheaper. Take a sponge and put a little bit of fabric softener on it. Then, scrub the stained area with it and any stuck materials should come right off. Be careful if there’s wallpaper, though, because wallpaper will come off too.

For hardwood floors, make sure you’re using mild soap. This will remove the dirt and grime without corroding the surface. Another thing to watch out for is pet hair in carpet. Even if the previous owners vacuumed the carpet well, there could still be remnants left behind. This can be bad if you have allergies or if their pets had fleas.
