Springfield, Illinois

Springfield, Illinois is the self-proclaimed “City Lincoln Loved," since it served as the beloved President’s workplace and political base for over twenty years. In addition to those moving to Springfield, Illinois, the city is also a popular tourist destination. The weather in Springfield is seasonal, and long periods with extreme temperatures are rare. Summers tend to be warm and humid and the winters are typically cold and dry. Moderate year-round temperatures in the city range from 70-80 degrees in the summer months to 30-40 degrees in the winter months.

Economy:
Held together by both the public and private sectors, Springfield has a well-diversified economic base on a population of approximately 113,000. The city serves as headquarters for over a dozen nationally recognized insurance companies and more than 165 state, regional and national associations. Recognized as a leader in the health care industry, Springfield, Illinois is home to two major hospitals and a world renowned heart surgery institute. Springfield’s consumer market area is located within a 10 county region, encompassing nearly 6,000 square miles, and supports products for export throughout the world, ranging from cake mixes, livestock and poultry feeds to space age electronics. Its varied industries produce consumer goods, machinery, transportation equipment, parking meters and electronic products. Oil and natural gas fields, along with several educational institutions lend to the area’s economic progress.

History:
Springfield City state capital of Illinois was incorporated as a city 1840. Located in a rich agricultural region, Springfield is a wholesale trade, retail and distribution center of the Midwest. First settled in 1820, the city wasn’t officially named Springfield until 1832. As a young man, Abraham Lincoln moved to Springfield in 1837 and spearheaded the effort to moved the state capital from Vandalia to Springfield. Abraham Lincoln, who was instrumental in having Springfield becoming state, is buried nearby, with his wife and three of their children, in a tomb and monument designed by L. G. Mead and dedicated in 1874. Lincoln's home is preserved as a national historic site. Soon after the Civil War, the first coalmine shaft was sunk in Springfield, which opened an industry that became important to the area. The state capitol building was constructed from 1868 to 1887. Most state offices were housed in the capitol until the Centennial Building was erected in 1923.

Springfield, Illinois is full of exciting events taking place during every season of the year. Such events include the Old Capitol Art Fair in May, the Illinois State Fair in August and the International Carillon Festival in June, just to name a few. With over a million tourist visit Springfield every year, there is no doubting the city’s ability to provide affordable entertainment to residence and visitors alike. Whether you are here for the weekend or relocating to the city permanently, spend some time experiencing Springfield’s historic Lincoln sites, which include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library, the Lincoln Home and Neighborhood, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, Lincoln Tomb, Lincoln’s New Salem, and more. Other attractions include the Dana-Thomas House, the Old State Capitol, the Illinois State Capitol and the Executive Mansion.
