Tourism:
Arlington, Virginia was first on the trek to become part of the District of Columbia in 1791 how was returned to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1846. This area was known as Alexandria City and Alexandria County before it became Arlington County to avoid mix-ups between the two places. During the American Civil War, Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861 and became part of the Confederacy. Alexandria County joined the state at this time.
