Laredo, Texas
The city of Laredo, Texas benefits in many ways from being in close proximity to Mexico. An ideal moving destination, Laredo is located right on the Texas/Mexico border along the Rio Grande River. Laredo is the largest inland port in the United States and it is one of the top cities for U.S. trade. Laredo’s trade industry dates back to the 1800s. It is a well known fact that the state of Texas flies six different flags; the Spanish, Mexican and French flags to honor the countries that once reigned over the state, and of course The American Flag, The Texas State Flag and The Confederate Flag. Laredo also flies a seventh - the flag of The Republic of the Rio Grande. For 283 days in 1840, Laredo along with other parts of South Texas and Mexico, formed this republic of which Laredo was the capital.
Economy:
The city of Laredo has a variety of employment opportunities. More residents are employed in the trade, transportation and utility industries than in any other sectors. Laredo is currently experiencing positive job growth. This uptick is largely due to the expansion of international trade in 2007 to the North American Free Trade Agreement. Laredo’s unemployment rate is slightly higher than the Texas state average, but the jobless rate has decreased dramatically since the 1990s.
Tourism:
Into seeing stars? Check out the Texas A&M International University Planetarium and Observatory. For more educational fun, scoot on over to the Imaginarium of South Texas – Laredo’s science museum. Maybe you’d like to go back in time and explore the historic Zaragoza Street’s historic district or head over to the Old Mercado for some old fashioned shopping? You will love the historic Laredo Trolley Tour which is always conducted in both English and Spanish. The tour starts at the San Agustin Plaza. You will also have the opportunity to visit Museum of the Republic of Rio Grande on your own as part of the deal. You may wish to stay at La Posada Hotel which is a luxury boutique hotel right in San Agustin Plaza. The hotel is comprised of four historic buildings including the former Laredo High School and a convent from the 1800s.
History:
Laredo was founded on May 15, 1755. The city was laid out to mirror that of a Spanish city. Everything is designed around the plaza or center of town. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and Laredo became was under Mexican rule. In 1845, war broke out between Mexico and the United States. The U.S. was victorious and the Rio Grande River became the official border between Texas and Mexico. With the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Laredo officially became a part of Texas and the United States. Those Laredoans who wished to remain Mexican citizens traveled back across the Rio Grande to settle in what then became Nuevo Laredo in 1848.
