Tourism:
Buddy Holly was born on September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. He would grow up to be considered one of the most influential Lubbock-born musicians that ever set foot in the city. Holly is said to have influence later bands like The Beatles and Hollies. The Rolling Stones had their first major British hit with Holly’s original “Not Fade Away.” He was quite the character, with black horn-rimmed glasses adorning his face at all times. He popularized the rock-band line up with two guitars, bass and drums. He died in a plane crash on a corn field in Iowa when he was 22 years old—an event that was immortalized in Don McLean’s song “American Pie” as “the day the music died.” No one can visit Lubbock without going to the Buddy Holly Center, where musical exhibits and programs provide educational outreach. Go for a chance to view Holly’s famous glasses and read stories about Lubbock’s most famous resident.

History:
Lubbock, Texas was named after the Confederate officer Tom S. Lubbock who became the county seat for the town after it was established. Lubbock officially became a city in 1909 a decade after the towns of “Old Lubbock” and “Monterey” joined together to form a community of 50 people. This grew to include a thriving farming town that produced two to three million bales of cotton a year. The city became even more developed when Lubbock own a contest to open up a new college called the Texas Technological University. The institute still brings in people and economic opportunities for the city of Lubbock. Lubbock is continuing to grow and the visitors to see the city’s sights and sounds are increasing annually.
