The Mitchell Corn Palace was built in 1862 and has remained a testament to the state's fertility. With these places in addition to other monuments that play tribute to the state's history and accomplishments, there are countless ways to spend your time in Suth Dakota. Capital City: Pierre is the state capital and the state's largest city.

South Dakota - Interesting Facts:
  • South Dakota is home to the largest buffalo herd in the U.S. at the Standing Butte Ranch.

  • In 1900, a big prairie dog settlement was found in South Dakota. It was 100 miles by 250 miles that was home to over 400 million prairie dogs.

  • South Dakota is home to many caves including Jewel Cave that is one of the largest in the world—it got its name from the calcite crystals that line the interior of the cave illuminating it with its glitter. There's another cave called the Wind Cave that has trails, which extend up to 82 miles.

South Dakota - Famous People:
Many famous people are from South Dakota as well as those that reside there today. Tom Brokaw and Mary Hart, the co-host of "Entertainment Tonight" are from South Dakota. Actress January Jones and the U.S. Senator Tom Daschle is also from South Dakota.
