In the summer, visitors should check out the Shakespeare in the Park performances, the Greenville Drive baseball games at Fluor Field at the West End, or some of the theater productions at the Peace Center. Other local favorites include the Lake Conestee Nature Park that used to be a 13-acre lake that has now created a haven or wildlife and bottomless forests; the Greenville County Museum of Art that features art from Jackson Pollock, Jonathan Green and Georgia O’ Keefe; and the Carolina Ballet Theatre company at the Peace Center with their presentation of Tschaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet.

History:
After the French and Indian War between the British and the French (the Native Americans fought with their French allies) from 1754 to 1763, today’s Greenville was a part of Cherokee nation that was settled in the Treaty of 1763. A few years later the sole white man allowed onto the land was Richard Pearis who married a Cherokee woman and in turn given land. After the Treaty of DeWitt’s Corner was in place, the Cherokee sectioned off some land to give back to South Carolina. Greenville County was created in 1786 and settled by textile workers. From then on, Greenville was known as the “Textile Center of the South.” The textile business eventually started to dwindle, replaced by parks, plazas, restaurants and business corporations. Today, there are great companies rooted in Greenville that continue to bring revenue and people to the southern city.
