History:
The original inhabitants of Pennsylvania’s Great Lakes city were the Iroquois and the Seneca nation. Then in 1795, the town was laid out in the Erie Triangle, an area of Pennsylvania that jets out over the straight northern border of New York. The territory officially went into the hands of Americans after land settlements were made with the Iroquois and Seneca groups for a little bit of payment. Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York fought over this land. The initial building and settlement begun at year as the borders of Pennsylvania and New York were decided. Erie, Pennsylvania continued to play a huge role in our country’s history as the setting for the great Battle for Lake Erie and became a hub for people who were in commerce and who were in travel.
Tourism:
There is so much to do in the city of Erie from sports to lying on the beach, and skiing to riding some of the highest roller coasters in the state. For a vacation in the winter, we would recommend taking advantage of Mount Pleasant in Erie that offers lifts, snow tubing, trails and skiing. In the warmer weather, there’s a 3,200-acre state park called Presque Isle that is widely known by tourists and locales alike. It is called the states only seashore because its settled along the coastline of the peninsula and offers beach activities as well as so much more. Also, unique to the island in comparison with the surrounding areas there is a great number of endangered species and rare animals that reside in this quiet area of Erie. There is also the new Tom Ridge Environmental Center for visitors interested in learning more about the threatened wildlife that lives in the Presque Isle State Park.
