Reading, Pennsylvania
Reading, Pennsylvania is a city that is steeped in Dutch tradition, but it was named after the English city Reading, from where William Penn hailed. It is sometimes known as the “Pretzel City” because there are so many pretzel bakeries located there. Many professional athletes have once called Reading home like Carl Furillo of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Donyell Marshall of the Philadelphia 76ers and Lenny Moore of the Baltimore Colts. The "Today Show" called Reading one of the “Up and Coming Neighborhoods” in 2007. The city earned this distinction due to major renovations, a concentration on green space and the fact that Reading is close to New York City and Philadelphia.
Economy:
Did you know that Reading was one of the first cities to make a major business out of outlet shopping? The outlets there are compelling enough to draw tourists to the area to shop while they are visiting. In the year 2009, there was a little less shopping going on than normal as the city really suffered from the country’s depression. Agriculture is currently the most prominent industry in Reading, but heavy manufacturing was once a key economic driver there as well. WIth all of these exciting job opportunities, it's no wonder why so many residents are moving to Reading.
Tourism:
Reading is filled with art and cultural activities. The city has several performing arts centers and the Reading Symphony Orchestra is known as one of the best in Pennsylvania. The largest jazz festival on the east coast takes place in Reading every year. The Google Works Center for the Arts has galleries and offers camps as well as classes for children and adults in everything from fine arts to belly dancing. There are also many festivals to enjoy throughout the year like the beloved “Go Fly A Kite Day,” which is a favorite for families. Kids can actually make their own kites right there at the festival. For more family fun and twangy music, check out the Fiddle Festival. There is also the annual Heritage Festival where residents can celebrate the history of Reading.
History:
Reading played an important role during wartime. Starting in 1754, Reading served as a military base during the French Indian War which was the portion of the conflict between the French and British fought on North American soil. By 1775, Reading had a huge iron industry which helped to arm George Washington and his troops during the American Revolution where the thirteen original colonies fought to break free of their British reign. 1883 brought the start of the well-known railroad company the Reading Railroad which existed until 1971 when the company was forced to file for bankruptcy. By the early 1900s Reading was home to the Daniels Motor Company, which was founded in 1916.
