Youngstown, Ohio

Economy:
Following the dramatic collapse of the steel industry in the 1970s and the resultant loss of tens of thousands of jobs, Youngstown experienced a radical contraction of more than half of its population. This left an oversized urban structure behind that gave the city planners plenty to think about in strategic terms, as they set about recreating Youngstown as a medium-size city in an economically sustainable form. Their new direction is targeting a more diverse and sustainable economy incorporating current strengths that include the university, the arts community and the health care sectors. Other innovative opportunities include the arrival of software development companies and growth in the food industry stimulating the relocation of many cross country movers

History:
New Yorker John Young first surveyed the future Youngstown area in Ohio in 1796 and later settled there himself. History does not record whether he chose to name the place after himself; however we do know that the name of the City was officially recorded on August 19, 1802. After large reserves of coal were discovered by the local community in the early 19th Century the road opened for the inclusion of Youngstown on the fortuitous Erie Canal network, and the Ohio Canal Company completed the new Pennsylvania & Ohio canal in 1840. These developments attracted immigrants from Europe in search of work opportunities in the burgeoning coal industry. In 1856, the arrival of the railroad brought further growth opportunities, although it did put paid to the canal in return. Thanks to large local deposits of coal and iron Youngstown soon developed a thriving steel industry, which lasted until the economic decline in the 1970s. After that, the City contracted and slumbered on until the fresh, exciting new initiatives began.

Tourism:
Whether you are moving to Youngstown, Ohio permanently or are visiting as a tourist there is much to see in this picturesque City. If it is an outdoor experience you are looking for, visit Fellows Riverside Gardens for a picnic. Described by Elizabeth Fellows as a “beauty spot for all to enjoy” it was Mrs. Fellows who in 1958 donated the land and the money needed for Mill Creek Park to build and maintain a free-entry garden for the public. If you prefer indoors activities rather, then try Lantermans Mill which was restored to its former glory back in 1982 – it is a fully-operational grist mill that still makes whole wheat flour and various cereals that you could taste and buy. The Covelli Center is a must to see as well, and is Northeast Ohio’s newest destination for family fun and entertainment. There are plenty of Museums and Art Galleries too - here are but a few considerations:

• Arms Family Museum  - Headquarters of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, set in an arts and crafts styled home.

• Butler Institute of American Art  - The Butler Institute of American Art was the first museum of American art established and has a fine collection

• McDonough Museum of Art – This inspiring Art Museum hosts rotating displays of college student and university faculty art work.

• Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor - This modern museum building contains fascinating exhibits which chronicle the rise and fall of the iron and steel industries in Mahoning Valley.
