Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland, Ohio is well known for its rock music and is in fact home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so be sure to visit this landmark if you are planning to visit the City. The Beatles, England’s most famous pop group played at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1964 and 1966. Amongst its many famous citizens, comedian Bob Hope, will likely be remembered above most; although born in Britain his family settled in Cleveland in 1908 and the rest, as they say, is history.
Economy:
Cleveland is headquarters for 11 Fortune 500 companies. Diversified manufacturing remains a primary economic pillar although historically the City relied on heavy industry to a greater extent. Cleveland is nicknamed “Polymer Valley” because of its large concentration of polymer manufacturers such as Goodyear Tire and Rubber. The science and engineering sectors are also quite evident locally, supported primarily by the manufacturing sector. In recent times, Cleveland has rapidly expanded in the field of biotechnology and biomedical research and development. Automobile parts, nuts and bolts, machine tools, rubber and oil products, rayon, electrical machinery and appliances are all typical of the goods produced in the city of Cleveland.
History:
Extending back over 200 years as it does, Cleveland’s history makes fascinating reading although there are far too many notable events to expand on here. Cleveland was incorporated on 12th December 1814. The first major development was the completion of the Ohio and Erie canals in 1832 which linked the Great Lakes and the Ohio River making Cleveland a major transport hub. Manufacturing industries quickly established themselves in the city and by the 1930s Cleveland was fifth largest city in the United States. Growth continued after World War Two, with strong demand being experienced for the production of consumer goods. In the 1960s and 1970s Cleveland experienced a slump in population as citizens sought newer housing in the outer suburbs, and heavy industry suffered a recession which prompted a shift to services, technology and tourism too. A dynamic public-private partnership initiative responded to this effectively - it is for good reason that Cleveland is also dubbed the “Come-Back City.”
Tourism:
You may well consider moving to Cleveland when you consider that this fine City is simply brimming with world-class events. More and more new arrivals are discovering that the charm of Cleveland’s neighborhoods is among the best-kept secrets of the City. Much of the populations Old World origins have been retained in several discrete areas, and these can often best be found in the form of exotic foods served there. There are diverse delights to be discovered in the form of different blends of art galleries, indie theatres, blue-collar watering holes and so-called “gastropubs.” In the downtown districts there is plenty to see and experience in the form of pro sports, fine dining and nightlife attraction toos. More sedate options for you? Try the historic neighborhoods on foot and take in the local shops, galleries and interesting architecture. The emerging neighborhoods also have much on offer!
