History:
Raleigh was founded in 1792 and named after Sir Walter Raleigh who planned to establish the first English colony in the New World in the 1580s. The site for Raleigh, later nicknamed “The City of Oaks,” was chosen, in part, for its proximity to Isaac Hunter’s Tavern, a popular venue frequented by State legislators, but also because no known town or city pre-existed on the chosen land. It was also one of the few cities established in the country with the purpose of serving as a state capital. Planners decided to lay the original settlement out in an axial fashion with one central square and four public squares. Andrew Johnson, the nation’s seventeenth President, was born at Casso’s Inn in Raleigh in 1808. In 1831 the State Capitol was destroyed by fire and was eventually replaced in 1840. Between 1914 -1917 an influenza epidemic struck Raleigh and claimed 288 of its citizens. During the Great Depression of the 1930’s all levels of government were focused on creating jobs and hired citizens for public works projects. In 1959 the Research Triangle Park project was opened and Raleigh began to see a population increase, reaching a city total of 100,000 by 1960. Raleigh has continued to keep pace with modernization throughout the recent decades with the result that it is an attractive and sought after place to live and work.
