In the year 2010, residents of Charlotte, North Carolina had much to delight about.  Construction started on January 26, 2007 on the NASCAR Hall of Fame--a $160 million attraction. This new site is a feather in Charlotte’s cap as it was responsible for hundreds of new jobs and will be a destination for tourists for years to come. It officially opened on May 11, 2010. For years, the skyline of Charlotte was characterized with construction cranes - perhaps an eyesore in some ways, but an amazing sign of progress at the same time as new boutiques, restaurants and entertainment venues popped up. Today numerous people are moving to Charlotte where they will instantly discover a hip Southern city.

Economy: 
The biggest economic drivers in Charlotte are banking and distribution. Charlotte is second only to New York City in terms of being a powerhouse in the banking industry. Over 600 foreign-based companies from countries like Japan, Switzerland, France and Great Britain have offices in Charlotte. Some of the key products currently produced in Charlotte are aircraft parts, food products, computers and textiles. Some of the biggest growth sectors are technology, metal working and vehicle assembly. Another exciting fact is that many defense-related industries are looking towards Charlotte for many important projects. Overall, the financial prognosis for Charlotte’s future remains strong as moving companies bring in new residents every day.

Tourism:

History: 
Charlotte became incorporated as a city in 1768. It was located where two major Native American trading routes intersected.  That intersection is now known as Tryon and Trade Street. The oldest building in Charlotte was built in 1774 and was the home of Hezekiah Alexander. It is currently part of the Charlotte Museum of history.  During the American Revolution there was so much unrest and hostility in the fair city that it was nicknamed the Hornet’s Nest by British Army Officer Charles Cornwallis.  Most Americans are familiar with the California Gold Rush which began in 1848, but did you know that 51 years earlier, gold was discovered in Charlotte in 1799? This city’s gold rush began in 1803 and thanks to this, Charlotte’s population grew. The next big boom occurred after World War I.  Fast forward to the end of the next century, and though human wars were in the past, two major natural disasters ravaged the city. On September 22, 1989 Hurricane Hugo caused immense damage to the city, and also left residents without power for weeks. In 2002, there was an ice storm causing additional damage and another two week bout of no power for the residents.
