Durham, North Carolina
The city of Durham, North Carolina bears the twin nicknames of “Bull City” and “City of Medicine.” Apart from being a very attractive and green place to live, you may well consider moving to Durham, North Carolina even more when you learn that in December 2007 Forbes.com ranked Durham one of the “top 20 places to educate your child.”
Economy:
Durham’s economy is well established and diverse supported as it is by an impressive array of research and development companies. Particularly important are the more than 130 firms based in the world-renowned Research Triangle Park, the largest and most successful planned research (and development) park in the United States and employing around 40,000 workers. Some of the biggest employers are IBM, Nortel, Glaxo Smith Klein, Duke University and the Medical Centre. Many other “spin-off” businesses have sprung up in the Park to take advantage of business opportunities too. North Carolina’s microelectronics and biotechnology centers are also located in Durham. Thanks to the wide choice of medical facilities available in Durham and growing clinical opportunities, Durham County ranks one of the Nation’s top five concentrations of physicians per capita.
History:
Native Americans have helped trace the Great Indian Trading Path through Durham by providing information about settlements and commercial transport routes. If the past is anything to go by, then Durham is a City on the move and has a strong history of transformation over the last 180 years. After seceding from the Union in 1861, North Carolina was readmitted in 1865. The "Bull City," Durham’s original nickname, prospered as a major manufacturing hub for the textile and tobacco industries for several decades. With the development of the Research Triangle Park in the 1950s though, Durham evolved into a global center for medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology (and information technology too), hence the more modern nickname of “City of Medicine.”
Tourism:
If you are considering moving to Durham, you will be pleased to know that the City promotes a major festival every four weeks on average. Durham residents are spoiled for options when it comes to entertainment, culture, shopping and outdoor activities where top-level basketball and baseball are on offer. Shop until you drop at a choice of appealing centers such as Ninth Street Shopping District, Southpoint Mall and Brightleaf Square. If it is Art and Culture you seek, then you have a fine selection of museums to choose from –you could visit the Duke Homestead and Tobacco Museum, a magnificent 19th Century estate and home to many attractions and exhibits depicting early tobacco farming in America. If science is more your scene, then why not try the Museum of Life and Science recognized globally for its facilities and programs. You and the kids could enjoy a walk through a rain forest and butterfly house, where more than 100 living species are on view.
Colleges/Universities:
