History:
The area of Fayetteville was first settled by Scottish immigrants in 1739 by way of the Cape Fear River. The city grew into a pillar of trade and commerce. Then in 1775, the Liberty Point Resolve — which took place in Fayetteville — occurred where locals gave an official declaration of support for the Revolutionary War. After the war when the colonies won independence from England, the North Carolina legislature met in the area to resolve issues with the signing of the U.S. Constitution. There are many historic districts in place in modern-day Fayetteville where visitors and locals can go to get a behind-the-scenes look. There are nine historic districts including the Downtown Fayetteville National Register Historic District, Haymount National Register Historic District, Liberty Point National Register Historic District and Market House Square National Register Historic District.

• Fayetteville is named after Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette. The city prides itself as the only place he visited that bears his name.

• There is a monument at Liberty Point, which commemorates the Liberty Point Resolves, an early version of the Declaration of Independence signed on June 20, 1775 in Fayetteville.
