With the introduction of the railroads, the canal that ran through the City center was re-routed south of Rochester as it was no longer deemed needed. Towards the end of the 1830s Rochester was the largest flour-producing center in America and by the mid 19th century the City had become an abundant nursery-gerden center giving rise to one of its nicknames of “Flower City.” After the Civil War, Rochester experienced renewed industrial activity with the arrival of names such as Eastman Kodak and Bausch & Lomb and the boom continued into the early 20th century when the city became a major force in the garment industry. Today Rochester proudly hosts a number of corporate headquarters in a diverse array of industrial sectors.
