Buffalo, New York

Among its many nicknames, Buffalo is best known as the “Queen City.” It is located in the western part of New York and has the second largest population in the state. In 2001, Buffalo, New York was given the title of the friendliest US city by USA Today. There is plenty to do both indoors and outdoors; whether you wish to watch the Buffalo Sabres play hockey or go to a NASCAR race at the Holland International Speedway.  Hunting and Fishing are popular sports and residents and visitors have many options for cultural experiences too. You can catch a performance of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra or go to one of the many museums Buffalo has to offer. Last but not least is Niagara Falls. There is surely something for everyone, so it’s wonder that so many people are moving to Buffalo.

Economy:
Since the 1940s, Buffalo has seen an unfortunate economic decline. Today, there are many efforts being done to reverse the city’s fortune. Banking, medical and scientific research and technology are three growing industries that the city hopes to continue to cultivate. Tourists from Canada help bring money into the city and so do the 12 million people who come to see Niagara Falls each year. The University of Buffalo has campuses in both Buffalo and Amherst. The schools are significant contributors to the local economy and the universities continue to make strides in research and development.

Tourism:
Visitors to Buffalo have a myriad of museum choices — whether you are interested in fine art at the Allbright-Knox Gallery, the Buffalo Museum of Science, the Big Orbit Gallery or the Pierce Arrow Museum. Frank Lloyd Wright’s creations the Darwin Martin House and Graycliff are both located in Buffalo. One of the most beautiful and well-known attractions is the Niagara Falls. The water flow is 100,000 cubic feet per second during peak tourist times. The falls are made up of the Horseshoe Falls (located entirely in Canada) and the American Falls, which are called the Rainbow Falls and the Bridal Veils Falls. Thanks to these unique attractions and area amenities, numerous people call Buffalo home and even more are moving here every year.

History:
In 1789, Buffalo was first inhabited by European Americans.  The city began to grow because it was the western terminus for the Erie Canal.  The canal served as a way to transport goods and also passengers – both were quite lucrative for the city.  Buffalo received its city charter in 1832.  In 1834, Buffalo got its first bank and railroad.  In the early 1900s, the city was known as “the gateway to the West.” Sadly, most of the major industries eventually moved out of Buffalo including manufacturing, automobile production, railroad commerce and grain storage. Skeletons of some of these still exist today.
