Newark, New Jersey

Located in northeastern New Jersey, just eight miles west of New York City, Newark is comprised of many neighborhoods that together give the city remarkable diversity and undeniable charm. Home to several golf courses, two professional football teams and numerous parks and recreation centers, Newark truly has something for every taste. In addition, those moving to Newark will discover a city that has been recently designated as a "Most Livable City" as well as an "All-America City."

History:
In June 1776, the provincial congress adopted a constitution and New Jersey was finally declared a state. Because of its strategic position, New Jersey was a major player in the American Revolution. During the 50 years that followed, the area experienced a period of significant economic expansion. The vital textile industry, powered by the falls of the Passaic, was initiated at Paterson. Potteries, shoe factories, and brickworks were built and roads were improved. During the early 1970s, the state government planned for substantial urban renewal and economic development projects, but the movement away from central cities continued throughout the 1970s and 1980s and into the 1990s. The Meadowlands Sports Complex opened in the mid-1970s. The complex includes a new state-of-the-art football stadium -- home to the Jets and Giants -- and Brendan Byrne Arena, which hosts professional hockey, basketball and special events. New Jersey was hard hit by recession in the early 1990s and the state suffered from overdevelopment, however, increasing economic diversity has made recent recovery efforts possible.

Economy:
Newark lies at the heart of the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area industrial economy. Newark is increasingly coming to rely on its strategic location at the center of air, sea, road and rail transportation networks for economic growth. Manufacturing was traditionally the city's most important economic activity, but transportation-related industries and telecommunications firms have recently surpassed it. Seven major highways, railway routes, an excellent shipping terminal and a busy international airport make Newark a major mid-Atlantic distribution and retail trade center. The city is one of the nation's leading centers in the wholesale trade of chemicals and machinery, and the third largest writer of life insurance policies. Both Mutual Benefit and Prudential Insurance Companies are headquartered in Newark.

Tourism:
Begin your exploration at the Newark Museum. The Newark Museum is an enthralling place to learn and experience the arts and natural sciences. Newark Museum is New Jersey’s largest museum, housing more than 80 galleries. Other notable venues in the city include the Newark Public Library and the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, which both act as major center for African American artists. Whether you are visiting New York or New Jersey, explore Aljira, and experience the richness of African American culture. Also located in Newark is Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies, in the University Heights section of the city. Newark, New Jersey once one of America's great jazz cities, is today home to many clubs providing musical entertainment. For the sports fanatic, enjoy a NFL football game and root for the Giants and Jets at their new state-of-the-art stadium. Dining out in Newark is a culinary experience. The city offers a wide range of restaurants to choose from. Whether it is a special celebration or just a night off for the cook at home, a snack or lunch out for the whole family - Newark can offer something for everyone. At night, a variety of pubs ranging from historic, timber-framed period inns to modern vibrant bars are available. In addition to pubs and restaurants, Newark has a number of nightclubs playing a mix of popular music, and the Palace Theatre has a good mix of drama, music and film.
