Springfield, Missouri

Springfield, Missouri is a very likable city.  It was selected as number 40 in the 50 best middle-sized cities for “best quality of life” by Bizjournals.com.  It’s where Brad Pitt grew up and it was once the home of "The Price is Right" host Bob Barker. The city is located amongst the Ozark Mountains, which is the largest mountain range in the United States. The weather pattern is quite unpredictable and is said to be the wildest in the country. Springfield boasts the only caverns that are large enough to take a jeep ride through – aptly named the Fantastic Caverns. Those moving to Springfield will soon be able to take advantage of these exciting attractions.

Economy:
Springfield’s economy is alive and well. The city was named as one of the top 50 “best places for business and careers.” This is the fourth year in a row Springfield has received this top honor. The city is also a leader in the country and first in the state of Missouri in new job creation and sustaining existing ones and in driving economic growth. The Missouri state government has implemented programs so that the city and state can work together to foster this growth. Springfield is lucky to have many natural resources like marble, zinc, lime and stone. Some of the key economic drivers include agriculture, transportation, utilities and health care. Many already large companies have been expanding and hiring new employees in Springfield such as Kraft Foods and Fed Ex. With all of these new opportunities, Springfield moving companies are busily bringing in new residents every day.

Tourism:
There are many different fun things to do in Springfield and several are located on the Ozark Mountains. You can take a hot air balloon ride right over the mountain range. There are a lot of cool exhibits at The Air and Military Museum of the Ozarks. There is also the Dr. Michael J. Clarke History Museum of Ozarks Scouting.  If you are interested in the history of Springfield, you can take a little trip to Founders Park and enjoy murals and displays that show the city’s history over the past 100 years. The whole family can learn about the city from the prehistoric era all the way through the 1950s at History Museum for Springfield-Greene County.  The Fresh Art Gallery showcases work by local artists. A fabulous place to catch a show is in the splendid gilded Gilloz Theater, built in 1926.

History:
The city was first established in 1838 and in the 1860s it was the site of several Civil War battles.  The 1860s also brought the first telegraph to the region on the road now named as Old Wire Road. By 1878 Springfield had it’s first telephone service. In 1879, a flour milling company, known as John F. Meyer and Sons Milling Company, was established and Springfield’s local flour was sold all over the United States. Springfield’s own water company came along in 1883.  In 1886 the city had its first electric street lights powered by the new Springfield Gas and Electric Company.  The first elevator was operable in Springfield’s town square by 1887 and the square welcomed a post office the following year. In 1896 the Springfield Fire Department firefighters got their first pay checks.
