Jackson, Mississippi

Residents of Jackson, Mississippi call their city “the best of the new South.” Jackson offers delicious southern cuisine and soul food. The city is well known for it’s music too, most specifically the Blues, R&B and Gospel genres. Jackson is home to the recording label Malaco Records. It is the capital of Mississippi and the largest in the state. The population is almost 200,000 people. Jackson has a prime location along the Pearl River. The Downtown area is considered the business and cultural center of Jackson. Ridgeland, located a few miles from Downtown has fabulous shopping and eateries. All of these amenities and more can be at your fingertips, when moving to Jackson.

Economy:  
There are a variety of businesses that call Jackson home. Saks, Incorporated, which is the parent company to Saks Fifth Avenue, has a distribution center in Jackson. Four banks are headquartered there – First American Bank, First Commercial Bank, Consumer National Bank and Trustmark National Bank. The Nissan Motor Company opened a plant there in 2003 which greatly helped the local economy by opening 3,300 new jobs. Up to 250,000 vehicles can be produced out of this facility each year. There are numerous other services related to the automobile industry that are located in Jackson and have created over 2,000 additional employment opportunities. Besides automobiles there are several other goods that are manufactured in Jackson like furniture, fabricated metals, airplane parts, and electronics. It's no wonder so many Jackson moving companies are busy bustling in new residents.

Tourism: 
Civil War buffs might enjoy a trip to Battlefield Park in Jackson. You also don’t want miss the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center and see exhibits from African Americans from Mississippi. History: 
Jackson was initially founded in 1821 and was originally called "LeFleur’s Bluff" after a man by the name of Louis LeFleur who ran the trading post that was located there. The city was then officially named Jackson after General Andrew Jackson – future President of the United States. In 1863, the Civil War Battle of Jackson was fought there. Union General Sherman torched the city and left it in ruins. In 1890 Mississippi’s Constitution contained language that made it difficult for African Americans to vote by requiring poll taxes and literacy requirements. In the 1960s, Jackson was the site of many protests, rallies and demonstrations on both sides of the segregation issue between black and white residents.  The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Acts of 1965 were soon passed.

Interesting Facts:
• The first African American to matriculate at the University of Mississippi in 1969 was James Meredith who lived in Jackson.
• The first lung transplant from a cadaver occurred at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson in 1963.
• In 1997, Harvey Johnson Jr. was the first African American Mayor elected in Jackson.
