History:
During the Civil War, the City of Macon served as a hospital for wounded confederate soldiers as well as a prison for union soldiers. Following World War I, Macon experienced a downturn due to crop failure, boll weevil and seasonal drought. For two years, in the mid 1920s, the Huff Daland Dusters operated in Macon. During the 1950s, the city began to create and draw a number of musicians with extraordinary musical talents. Among the names closely associated with the city are Otis Redding, James Brown and Little Richard. It only made sense that the Georgia Music Hall of Fame be built in a city that had such a widespread inpact on music in America. In 1994, the city of Macon, along with much of central and western Georgia, felt the effects of hurricane Alberto. The hurricane caused the city's water treatment plant to flood. And more than 160,000 people were forced to go over two-weeks without treated water. Today, the Macon has fully recovered from the damage done by hurricane Alberto and is looking forward to a bright future.
