Jacksonville, Florida

As the largest city in the state of Florida, Jacksonville's business-friendly laws, low cost of living and high quality of life make moving to Jacksonville an excellent choice. Jacksonville has a great mix of natural beauty, gorgeous beaches all within a bustling southern city. New residents will also discover much to do and see from music festivals to shopping to international sporting events; it's no wonder why so many Jacksonville moving companies are so busy.

Economy:
As a transportation hub, Jacksonville has a 38-foot deepwater port, four airports and three seaports. The city is also responsible for making automotive parts and is the location of Southeast Toyota and General Motors Corp. that serves Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. Jacksonville also produces pulp and paper mills, construction equipment, optical products and surgical parts. The city is also a major center for aviation that contributes $6.1 billion dollars to the city's economy.

History:
The first people to live in Jacksonville were the Native Americans known as the Timucua. Europeans came in the area in the 1500s and the Timucua slowly died due to diseases brought over or in combat. Ponce de Leon later discovered Florida in 1513, which was later owned by the French and the Spanish. In the 1700s, the area was a British colony that later become a part of the U.S. in 1819 that was finally granted statehood in 1845.

After the Civil War, Jacksonville residents renovated the downtown area to make it a tourist attraction that remained vital despite a terrible fire in 1901. It wasn't until the 1970s that the area saw a slump due to the rising popularity of suburban homes. In the 1980s and 1990s, city leaders made persistent efforts to revitalize the Jacksonville downtown area. Local property owners also colluded to create the city’s first Downtown Improvement District. These efforts paid off by making Jacksonville the exciting town that it is today.

Tourism:
When you move to Jacksonville you will quickly discover many exciting things to see and do. Starting with a day (or days) at the beach where you swim, relax and soak in the sun. Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach as well as downtown Jacksonville are excellent places to explore the miles of pristine sandy white beaches. Kids and families will love exploring the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, the Marineland Dolphin Conservation Center or touring the ocean via a Amelia River Cruise. Jacksonville is also home to an impressive nature preserve -- the Timucan Ecological and Historic Preserve -- where you can explore 46,000 acres of undisturbed areas, wetlands and salt marshes.
