Tampa, Florida
A Gulf Coast bay city, Tampa is a part of the metropolitan area often called the Tampa Bay Area. Located in Hillsborough County, near St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Tampa is an exciting destination for those seeking excellent outdoor amenities with warm and moderate temperatures. The city’s economy, history and thriving tourist industry also attracts those moving to Tampa from across the country and around the world.
Economy:
The bay in Tampa is a large contributor to the city's economy. Agricultural, food products, oil electronics, computers and car parts also contribute to Tampa's economy. Cigars have been a major export since the 19th century, but they are now joined by beer, citrus products, fertilizers, livestock, flowers, shrimp, insecticides, processed foods and decorative plants.
History:
Orginally called "Tanpa," the area of Tampa was once a fishing village whose name was changed when the explorer Ponce de Leon wrote "Tampa" on his maps. In 1772, cartographer Bernard Romans named the area “Hillsborough” in honor of Lord Hillsborough. In 1821, the United States purchased Florida from Spain and the U.S. established Fort Brooke to protect the strategic bay and attract traders to the area. By 1825, Tampa was officially incorporated as a town.
Tourism:
Tampa Bay is not your typical Florida city. The area is home to major theme parks like Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove and Dinosaur Cove. Tampa Bay is also place to explore arts and culture, ranging from the Henry B. Plant Museum, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Tampa Bay Historical Center and of course many displays of public art.
