Ontario, California

One of California's first planned communities, Ontario, California was established as a Model Colony and has constantly attracted those in search of a brighter future. Founded on innovation, community service and family values, the City of Ontario has become the economic center of the region. Ontario continues to invest in the progress of the city’s economy while providing a balance of jobs, housing, and education and recreational opportunities; building a sustainable environment to work, live and play.

History:
Since the land holdings of California materialized in 1834, the land was transferred to private ownership. In 1881, the Chaffey brother bought this land and its water rights, creating a drainage system that channeled the water from the Mount Baldy foothills to the flat lands positioned below. This provided farmers with water for their crops and prevented the floods from causing further destruction. The Model Colony, which was started here, had some clauses that did not allow for the sale or manufacturing of alcohol inside the town. The Chaffey brothers decided to name this town Ontario, since their origins were from the Canadian province of Ontario. Most people that arrived to Ontario were either farmers who grew citrus or Easterners in search of a dry climate. The incorporation of the city of Ontario happened in 1891, and in 1906, North Ontario broke away and become Upland. In the beginning of the 20th century, the first farm workers from Japan and Philippines moved to the city. Following this immigration, Ontario’s population grew quickly, increasing tenfold in only 50 years.

Economy:
Located just 35 miles east of Los Angeles, Ontario, California is often considered the region’s heart of population and job growth. With growing logistics and high technology sectors, Ontario is quickly becoming Southern California’s next urban center. Its high quality office development, urban housing and lifestyle amenities make the city an attractive location for businesses of any size. Ontario offers an exceptional pro-business environment with a highly skilled labor pool, practical lease rates and modern workspaces necessary to compete in a global economy. The LA/Ontario International Airport provides transportation and access to regional, national and global markets. Toyota North America, Nordstrom and Uline are just a few examples of companies who have invested their futures in the City of Ontario. Today, Ontario preserves its manufacturing industry with companies such as the Maglite Corporation. However, manufacturing has wavered, and today the city’s economy is dominated by the service and warehousing industries. Today, much of Southern Ontario still contains dairy and other agricultural farms; however, the area is currently under renovation, with plans to turn the area into a mix of residential homes, industrial parks and town centers.

Tourism:
Ontario offers a variety of entertainment options for the entire family. Looking to do some shopping? Ontario is home to the over 1.5 million square foot Ontario Mills—Southern California’s largest outlet shopping mall and entertainment center.  Next, check out the city’s state-of-the-art Citizens Business Bank Arena.  This beautiful new arena features concerts, family shows and a variety of sporting events. For the history buff, head over to one of the city’s numerous museums to explore historic art exhibits and learn a bit more about the area. Or visit one of Ontario’s many parks and recreation centers—which support a wide variety of family activities for the entire group. The city’s prime location also offers easy access to entertainment opportunities in the Southern California area. Spend an afternoon on the beach—soaking in some rays, or take a trip to Disneyland California for a day filled with thrill-rides and amusing family attractions.
