History:
One Alonzo Cook is credited with the founding of Garden Grove which began as a small rural crossroads in 1874, and remained undeveloped until the arrival of the rail network in 1905. Crops such as oranges, chili peppers, walnuts and strawberries were farmed in the immediate area and railed rapidly to eager markets. Catastrophe struck Garden Grove in 1933 when the central business district was flattened by the Long Beach Earthquake. Rapid developments followed World War 2 though and, in 1956, Garden Grove was incorporated as a City with 44,000 citizens. This figure doubled by 1960 to reach 85,000 and by 1970 the population had risen to 120,000. The late 1970s saw a large influx of Asian migrants, mainly Vietnamese and Korean folk. In more recent times, the Harbor Boulevard area has become a landmark tourist destination where it is well served by no less than nine high-rise hotels. An event known as the annual Strawberry Festival occurs over Memorial Day weekend and attracts an estimated 250,000 tourists each year to Garden Grove.
Tourism:
Those seeking fine arts in Garden Grove will find three live theatre venues, while those with young families may prefer the California Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort a mile outside of town. At Stanley Ranch Museum, a number of buildings date from early pioneering days – attractions include an Electric Shoe and Barber Shop, family homes, Ware-Stanley House, a 1877 Post Office, and a 1926 American La France vintage fire engine. Garden Grove’s rich cultural diversity guarantees different dining opportunities every day of every year.

Interesting Facts:
• Since 1952 Garden Grove was called the Strawberry Capital of the World . It was also called Egg Capital, Poultry Capital, and Chili Pepper Capital in early years. Nobody is any longer quite sure why.
• The Crystal Cathedral is the venue for the television show “Hour of Power”. It can seat up to 10,000 worshippers.
• Garden Grove hosts a large Vietnamese community whose cuisine and culture have added an exotic angle to dining out at night.
• The spirit of the nickname ‘The City of Youth and Ambition’ can be seen everywhere in inner City areas, where an urban rebirth is taking place.
