History:
The area was first under control in 1846 when the Mexican settlement was taken over. Previously, the land was under Native American control for many thousands of years. Oil was discovered in the city in 1892 which resulted in explosive growth in future years. Additionally, in 1913, an aqueduct was developed supplying Los Angeles with clean water and the ability to grow further. In the 1920's, the motion picture industry in Los Angeles grew tremendously, and helped make it the world leader it is today. World War II was a boom time for the city as it was a hub for needed war supplies.

Los Angeles is the largest manufacturing center for the western part of the United States and one of the busiest ports in the world for trade. It is a leader in entertainment, aerospace, petroleum, shipping, finance, fashion, industry, distribution, and communication. Los Angeles is home to six Fortune 500 companies including Health Net and Occidental Petroleum.
