Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock, Arkansas is a lively metropolitan area with nationally recognized medical centers and excellent public services. Centrally located, Little Rock is situated only a few hours from several major cities. The geographical, financial and political hub of the state, Little Rock is at the juncture of Arkansas’ two major regions. Those moving to Little Rock will find everything from a recovering job market, inexpensive living, available housing and the welcoming spirit felt throughout the South.

History:
In 1803, at the time of the Louisiana Purchase, Arkansas was virtually desolate. Once the territory became part of the United States, however, an increasing number of Americans became interested in the area. The city grew gradually, though it remained an active frontier village for several decades. In 1831, Little Rock was officially chartered and reincorporated. The postwar Reconstruction period in Arkansas was met by financial ruin and political disorder. Attempts to create a northern-style industrial economy were unsuccessful, largely due to demands placed on the agrarian society. The 1880s saw significant growth in the state’s railroad system, prompting the Little Rock population to soar. In 1957, the world’s focus was turned to the Arkansas capital when Governor Orval E. Faubus and the Arkansas National Guard forcibly tried to stop the integration of Little Rock Central High School. The 1960s brought far-reaching changes to the South. And, today, Little Rock has abandoned the attitudes of the "Old South," and continues working toward a brighter tomorrow.

Economy:
The largest city in a mainly rural and agricultural state, Little Rock is at the center of economic development in Arkansas. For years, cotton, rice, soybeans and other crops were the city’s main source of revenue. However, during the 1950s and 1960s, the Arkansas Industrial Development Corporation began an aggressive campaign to attract manufacturers to the state. Although few companies established large operations, hundreds of companies moved in and set up small factories employing fewer than 1,000 workers. Revitalization of downtown Little Rock has helped attract major corporations in a variety of industries; particularly manufacturing, transportation and service. Agriculture maintains a firm grasp on the city’s economy as well as Arkansas as a whole. Nearly one-fourth of all jobs in the state involve agriculture. Major sectors include soybeans, rice, timber and poultry.

Tourism:
Outdoor enthusiast will enjoy exploring Little Rock’s many city parks. These parks offer everything from running and walking trails, ball fields, fishing and picnic areas. Next, head over to Pinnacle Mountain State Park. This large facility offers a birds-eye view of Little Rock from its summit, and provides views the Trail of Tears route. Check out the energetic River Market District featuring restaurants, shops, bars and museums. Next, the Arkansas Arts Center, houses one of the most highly praised collections of works on paper in the country, and is one of the city’s premier attractions. Make your way over to the Robinson Center Music Hall, where both the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Ballet Arkansas perform. The Arkansas Repertory Theatre and several theaters, comedy clubs, jazz and blues bars, and energetic dance clubs also host entertaining events in Little Rock. At night, the city is host to several mellow dive-bars and after-hours hotspots where you can grab a drink and chat with friendly locals.
