Mesa, Arizona
Located in the south-central part of the Arizona, its population of about 460,000 makes Mesa the largest suburb in the nation. It is one of the nation’s fastest growing cities and is constantly striving to improve its way of life. Mesa prides itself in being able to maintain a suburban environment while providing the amenities of a thriving modern city. When moving to Mesa, you will soon discover a great city that is rich in history and charm.
History:
Two thousand years back, Mesa was home to the Hokoham Indians, who built a 125-mile canal system that is still used today. It was around 1878 that the first settlers arrived in the area; they came to be known as the First Mesa Company. There was confusion in the naming of the place. The Post Office would use different names; however the town itself was called Mesa City. It was around 1889 that the name Mesa City was officially used. Mesa was further developed by Dr. A.J. Chandler, enlarging the Mesa Canal with machinery; building an office complex and electric power plant. Mesa continued to grow with hospitals, paved streets, recreation departments and libraries. Around 1910 Chinese and Japanese immigrants came to the area as farmers and business owners. During the Second World War, Falcon Field Airport and Williams Air Force Bases were built as training grounds for British and American pilots. Early aerospace companies sprouted in Mesa in the 1950s, as well as more commerce and industry. From the 60s through the 90s, the establishment of high technology firms frequented the area.
Economy:
Aeronautical industries are the primary income source of Mesa. Aviation giant Boeing maintains a facility at the Falcon Field Airport. Arizona Aviation, Eagle’s Roost Aviation Services and Professional Flight Instruction are among the many aviation training businesses in the area’s airports. TRW Vehicle Safety Systems Inc., a producer of vehicle safety equipment, is Mesa’s leading manufacturer. A flourishing golf technology industry is also present in Mesa, as evidenced by driving ranges and laboratories at the Arizona State University Polytechnic campus. Military equipment is also produced in this city.
Tourism:
Having a golf technology industry, Mesa is considered as a Golf paradise. Golf lovers from around the nation consider moving to Mesa to enjoy its state-of- the-art golf facilities. The city also has a number of natural attractions nearby, like the Superstition Mountails, Apache Trail and different lakes. Museums, such as the Arizona Museum of Natural History and the Commemorative Air Force Museum are also present in the area. Mesa also has a variety of restaurants and bars. Mesa is accessible through air as it is close to two major public airports: Phoenix Sky Harbor International and Phoenix Mesa Gateway.
Mesa also plays hosts to a number of annual events. The Arizona Renaissance Faire features medieval arts, an outdoor circus and crafts. The Faire is held between early February and early April on weekends each year. There's also the Annual Great Southwest Rubber Stamp Fall Fiesta, which takes place in early March and features refreshments, door prizes, many stamp vendors and booths. In March, many sports fans flock to watch the Chicago Cubs train at Hohokam Park. July vacationers enjoy Mesa's Annual Independence Day Celebration, which includes a firework display, music and activities for children.
