Glendale, Arizona

Located northwest of Phoenix and is considered part of the greater Phoenix area, Glendale has been one of the fastest growing and dynamic metropolitan areas in the nation making it the fourth largest city in Arizona. Well served with efficient ground, air and rail transportation, people moving to Glendale can easily find their way into this vibrant city.

Economy:
Luke Air Force Base and certain manufacturing operations help drive the Glendale economy, but the city’s economy is partially dependent on the economy of the broader region. The Western Maricopa County is experiencing tremendous growth and much of that growth is centered in Glendale. Other top employers in the city include Arrowhead Towne Center, Thunderbird Samaritan Medical Center, Honeywell, and the City of Glendale. With an economy that continues to be on the rise, Glendale is a popular moving destination for business investors looking to broaden their horizon. Small businesses are said to be the backbone of Glendale’s economy which is why new companies choose to plant their roots in Glendale.

History:
In 1882, William J. Murphy together with three Arizona builders, M.W. Kales, William A. Hancock and Clark Churchill, led the Arizona Canal Co. project, which would bring water to Glendale which was then nothing more than an empty desert. The canal was completed in May 1885.  By the late 1880s, several homesteaders began to settle around the new canal. William H. Bartlett, one of the early settlers, started a 640-acre fruit farm in 1886, complete with a main house and 13 other buildings. It became known as the Sahuaro Ranch.
The diagonal Grand Avenue was constructed in 1888, again, by Murphy. Glendale was born on February 27, 1892,  when the first residential area of the city began to take shape. The Glendale town site began to take shape soon after, and the first school, the Glendale Grammar School, was build in 1895. Its opening drew people from all over the Valley. In the mid 1890s, Glendale became the pathway for a line of the Santa Fe Railroad, linking the Valley to Prescott and northern Arizona. The railroad allowed Glendale settlers to transport goods to the north and easily receive building materials.

Tourism:
Glendale is the sports destination of Arizona. It plays hosts several sporting events in various locations throughout the city. The NHL's Phoenix Coyotes and NLL's Arizona Sting began playing in Glendale when Jobing.com Arena (formerly the Glendale Arena) opened in December 2003. The new University of Phoenix Stadium is home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, which opened in August 2006. In 2008, Super Bowl XLII was played there when the Giants faced the Patriots.  The Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball both moved to Glendale and share a facility, known as Camelback Ranch, for spring training 2009.
