Mobile, Alabama
Mobile, Alabama, is a clean modern city with plenty of attractions for those moving to the area. It is also steeped in history, which includes a fair smattering of French influence, seeing as Mobile was the first capital of colonial French Louisiana back in 1702. The city derived its name from the Native American Mobilian tribe that the French colonists encountered when they arrived. Whether you are looking to start your Caribbean tour from the deck of a ship at Mobile Bay’s new world-class cruise terminal, or just looking to soak up some of the local adventures instead, those moving to Mobile will discover a city that has it all and is certainly worth exploring.
Economy:
The Port of Mobile has played a key role in the development of the city commencing with the French using the base as a key trading center with the Native Americans. Today, Mobile Bay is the ninth largest port in the United States. In the 1830s, though, the cotton trade was the focus of the economy. The years of World War II saw a massive increase in military hardware production in Mobile, Alabama. This was the impetus for large-scale development of the economic structure, and a significant increase in population too. In the 1960s, the closing of the Brookley Air Force Base ushered in a period of economic depression in the area, and it was only in the 1980s that sustained effort under new initiatives saw Mobile re-emerge as a competitive force. Shipbuilding returned as a major employment provider in 1999 when Austal USA arrived. Today an impressive new cruise terminal is in place that brings tourists in and out of Mobile as cruise liners begin and end their voyages there.
History:
Mobile Bay City is located at the northern end of the Gulf of Mexico and at the point where the Mobile River enters the warm waters of Mobile Bay. The City of Mobile was under French rule for the first 100 years, and thereafter fell under the influence of Britain and Spain before eventually becoming part of the United States of America in 1810, following the annexation of West Florida by President James Madison. Mobile left the Union in 1861 when it chose to join the Confederate States, but rejoined again following the cessation of hostilities. The first ever submarine to successfully take out an enemy ship was built in Mobile and used in the American Civil War.
Tourism:
As is the case with any number of modern cities, Mobile Bay depends heavily on the tourism industry. You may well consider moving to Mobile Bay when you experience the welcome and great outdoors feel as well. From delicious fresh seafood, to fascinating museums or a choice of no less than 21 world-class golf courses, you are going to have your hands full while enjoying every magic moment in this wonderful Gulf City( the locals even call it a “Mobile Baycation”). The USS Alabama is a must-see given its illustrious history of nine successful World War 2 battle sorties. Perhaps you just want to laze in the sun - you will find many lovely white sandy beaches to enjoy. Other attractions include several art museums, and if it is music you seek, then your only difficulty will be whether to choose opera, ballet or full-on symphony orchestra.
