Bronx, New York is home to a diverse group of residents. Billy Joel, Jennifer Lopez, Regis Philbin and Cuba Gooding Jr. have all called the city their home at one time or another. Edgar Allen Poe lived in the Bronx during the last three years of his life. His former residence is known as Poe Cottage. As for the less famous folks, chances are they work in the service industry. Tourism:
There is a wide variety of things to do in the Bronx. You can take in a Yankees game or even go on a guided tour of the stadium. The Bronx is home to the amazing Bronx Zoo. While there you can “visit” animals in the Congo, Africa or Asia. Thanks to the administration by the Wildlife Conservation Society, the animals’ homes are closely modeled after their natural habitats. At the New York Botanical Garden guests will delight in the many varieties of trees and flowers as well as the model trains on display.  The oldest building in the Bronx is the Van Cortlandt house. It was built in 1748 by the prominent Van Cortlandt family. They sold the house to the city in 1889. In 1897 the home became a public museum and in 1967 it was added to the National Registry of Historic Places.

History: 
The Bronx was first settled by its Swedish namesake Jonas Bronck in 1639. In 1693 the first bridge to Manhattan was built. During the American Revolution on October 18, 1776 Colonel John Glover and his troops attacked the British. The Americans preserved and continued on to the Battle of Pell’s Point where around 1,000 British soldiers were killed, but only 12 of Glover’s were lost. The Colonel was also instrumental in helping General George Washington and his army re-claim the land. In the 1890’s, trolley service began in the Bronx, which began to drastically change the city’s landscape. Then in 1904, subway service started running between Manhattan and the Bronx. In 1914, Bronx County or borough became an entity separate from Manhattan.  Like many others, the city suffered slowdowns and financial setbacks during the Depression, but then was revived again once World War II was over.  Today, Bronx moving companies are flourishing as new residents relocate to this area.
